Great GNAC Hoop Races Shaping Up (Sunday, Jan. 13)

There's been a lot of excitement around the GNAC since the calendar turned, and it only figures to get more intense.

Let's start with the women. Western Washington and Simon Fraser have been the class of the league so far, and it's no shock their matchup yesterday was decided by a WWU buzzer beater.

The win by the Vikings gives them a half-game lead over Montana State Billings and a one-game lead over SFU. Seattle Pacific (4-2) is also in pursuit.

Things will get even more interesting at the top of the standings this week as the top four teams square off against each other. WWU and SFU host MSUB and SPU.

On the men's side, last Thursday's regionally televised matchup between No. 5 Western Washington and Central Washington had to be one of the great games in conference history. WWU kept their perfect season intact by scoring the game-winner with 2.2 seconds left. The victory came before a sellout crowd in Bellingham on the same day WWU coach Tony Dominguez had the interim tag lifted from his title.

The Vikings lead the GNAC with a 5-0 mark.

Right behind WWU is upstart Alaska Fairbanks, which has won six straight and is in second place with a 5-1 GNAC mark. Seattle Pacific, ranked eighth last week, is 4-1.
