GNAC Insider: SFU's Visit to the Birthplace of Golf

Theresa Hanson
The seventh season of GNAC Insider is off and running.

In this week's episode, the weekly podcast of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference featured student-athletes from Northwest Nazarene (women's soccer player Rikki Myers) and Western Oregon (football player Curtis Anderson) in addition to Simon Fraser athletic director Theresa Hanson.

Myers joined host Rob Lowery to discuss the fast start of the Nighthawks, who are 3-1 (and winners of three straight) heading into a weekend road trip to southern California. Myers last week set a GNAC record by scoring four goals in a victory over Cal State East Bay, which helped earn NNU GNAC Team of the Week honors. Her interview begins at the 1:30 mark of the episode linked below.

Anderson, a defensive back for WOU, is a returning first-team all-conference selection who has 13 tackles and 141 return yards in two games. The Wolves open conference play this Saturday at preseason favorite Azusa Pacific. Anderson's interview occurs at the 26:20 mark.

Hanson, who is closing in on four years as AD at Simon Fraser, just recently returned from Scotland, where she joined the SFU men's golf team on a wonderful trip to the birthplace of golf. Among other activities, the Clan participated in the Stirling International, a collegiate event featuring 20 international teams competing at the Fairmont St. Andrews Torrance Course (SFU finished fourth).

All told, the Clan played six full days of golf and had a chance to play all the historic golf courses in St. Andrews (except for the Old Course). The list of courses included The New Course (built in 1895), The Jubilee Course (built in 1897), The Eden Course and the Castle Course.

Hanson helped arrange for SFU's participation through a relationship with a former colleague now at the University of Stirling in Scotland. SFU's women's team will make a similar trip in 2021.

Hanson's interview begins at the 12:30 mark. Listen below.
