Regional Rankings Start For Real This Week

Western Oregon men's hoops could be rated No. 1 this week.
After last week's practice ranking, the DII Regional Advisory Committees -- those six-person groups responsible for determining the at-large berths in both the men's and women's basketball NCAA Regionals -- get down to the real thing this week.

These regional committees -- one each for men and women -- will pore over data between now and Tuesday before ultimately finalizing the first of four rankings. This week's initial ranking will be released Wednesday.

While win-loss (and in-region DII) records are critical, here are the other significant criteria categories these committees will dissect in the evaluation process:

Men
  • Performance Indicator (a system that assigns numerical values to game results depending on the site and quality of opponent);
  • In-region RPI (numerical value determined by won-lost record (25%); opponents' winning percentage (50%); opponents' opponents' winning percentage (25%);
  • Results vs. ranked DII opponents

Women
  • In-region strength of schedule (opponent's average winning percentage and opponents' opponents' average winning percentage);
  • Late-season performance (for instance, the last 15 games before the final selection call);
  • Performance Indicator (a system that assigns numerical values to game results depending on the site and quality of opponent);

Remember, the conference tournament champions in the GNAC, PacWest, and CCAA claim automatic bids to NCAA postseason play. That leaves five at-large berths per gender to fill out the respective eight-team regional fields. There is no limit on the number of at-large berths per conference.
