GNAC's 'Women in Sports' Seminar Returns in January

One of the recent initiatives by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference was the introduction last spring of the inaugural "Women in Sports" career seminar,
Kimberly Ford of the NCAA office
an event intended to engage college females interested in careers in the world of sport with current professionals in the industry.

After all, what better way to gain valuable insight on launching a career in the sports field than to tap into the experiences of those who have gone before you?

The event last May 17 drew more than 20 panelists to the Washington Convention and Trade Center in downtown Seattle, and included representation from the pro, college and high school ranks. The all-day seminar featured a keynote address by Kimberly Ford of the NCAA, as well as graduate school booths from a host of universities, and a final "takeaway" session led by a university administrator from a respected sports administration program. In all, more than 75 students from the West -- from Alaska to California and east to Idaho and Montana -- were exposed to hundreds of years of experience from those currently working in the field.

The GNAC is pleased to see the seminar return in 2015 -- and we're excited to be partnering with the Portland Trail Blazers on the event.

The second annual "Women in Sports" career seminar is slated for Saturday, Jan. 24 at Memorial Coliseum in Portland; in addition to an afternoon of learning and networking, attendees will be treated to an NBA game featuring the Blazers and the Washington Wizards later that evening at one of the top venues in the NBA.

GNAC assistant commissioner Bridget Tetteh, an alum of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference who excelled in track and field before launching a collegiate coaching career, initiated conversations with the Blazers, and ultimately put together the relationship which we believe will help drive more females to this unique event.

In addition to those currently enrolled in college, the event is also open to high school juniors and seniors who may be interested in pursuing sports-related careers.
