WWU Golfer Posts Impressive Showing at Patriot All-America Invitational

Dylan Goodwin
Happy New Year, GNAC fans!

Here's today's update:

Western Washington's Dylan Goodwin Monday finished in a tie for 39th at the Patriot All-America Invitational, a unique tournament which brought 82 of the country's top collegians together in the same field for the second consecutive year.

The three-day, 54-hole event was held at the Wigwam Golf Club in Lichtfield, Ariz. To be invited, competitors needed to meet certain criteria, and most entrants qualified by achieving All-America status last season. The field included players from all NCAA levels, including DI.

WWU's Goodwin, a third team PING All-American the past two seasons, fired rounds of 74, 75 and 74 for a 223 total on the par 70 layout. The event was won by Sebastian Cappelen of the University of Arkansas, who posted a three-round total of 206, four under par.

The event benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation which provides scholarship and other assistance to families of fallen or disabled members of the military. Each player was provided a special red, white and blue golf bag which was inscribed with the name of a fallen soldier the player represented. The bags are auctioned off following the tournament and proceeds directed to the Folds of Honor Foundation.

Said Steve Card, WWU golf coach: "This was a very respectable performance by Dylan. I'm sure he would have hoped for better, but given the time of year and the strength of the field, he did well. There are only positives to take from competing at this time of year. Dylan has struggled a little this year in the fall, but I think getting an early event in such as this will only propel him into the spring season. This was a tremendous experience for Dylan. This event, and what it stands for, really gives the players a proper perspective. I know it made an impact on Dylan."

The highly-decorated Goodwin was the GNAC's Player of the Year in 2011.
