Taking Shape: GNAC, PacWest and CCAA Hoop Races

As the regional advisory committees across Division II convene for "practice ranking" calls on Tuesday, now is a good time to take a look at the standings leaders, by conference, across the West Region.

On the men's side, Seattle Pacific (GNAC), Azusa Pacific and Point Loma (PacWest) and UC San Diego (CCAA) top their respective league standings with three weeks to go in the regular season. Once-beaten UC San Diego (22-1 overall, 16-1 CCAA) is the current favorite to lock down the region's No. 1 seed for the regional playoffs and the accompanying regional hosting rights.

On the women's side, Alaska Anchorage (GNAC), Hawaii Pacific (PacWest) and UC San Diego (CCAA) are the current conference leaders. Hawaii Pacific, winner of 16 in a row, has suffered just one loss on the season (an out-of-region setback to Northern Sun co-leader Sioux Falls) and is in a tight race with UAA for the coveted regional hosting rights.

Postseason notes:
  • Conference tournaments -- with auto bids to the regionals on the line in each -- take place the first week of March, with champions crowned on Saturday, March 7.
  • The GNAC's championship events will be hosted by Seattle Pacific University March 5-7. The PacWest tourneys are slated for the same dates on the campus of Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. The CCAA's events, which begin with quarterfinal action at campus sites on March 3, move to UC San Diego for the semis and finals on March 6-7.
  • In addition to automatic qualifiers in each gender, there will be five at-large berths awarded to the men's and women's eight-team regionals. These at-large berths are determined by six-member regional advisory committees (two members per conference).
