Below are some recent pertinent updates issued from the NCAA’s national office in Indianapolis.


NCAA Board Endorses Catastrophic Injury Guidelines
The NCAA’s top governing board has unanimously endorsed comprehensive recommendations for the prevention of catastrophic injury and death.

The recommendations are contained in a new Association-wide policy that provides a road map for schools across the country to effectively prevent injury in six areas. They are:
  • Sportsmanship
  • Protective equipment
  • Acclimatization and conditioning
  • Emergency action plans
  • Strength and conditioning personnel
  • Education and training

NCAA Elects Independent Leaders to Board of Governors
The NCAA Board of Governors on Tuesday selected the five independent members who will join college and university presidents on the board that sets the future direction for college sports. These five leaders will provide increased objectivity and fresh perspectives to the Association’s highest-ranking governance body.

The newly elected members are:
  • Kenneth Chenault, chairman and managing director of General Catalyst and former chairman and chief executive officer of American Express Co.
  • Mary Sue Coleman, president of the Association of American Universities and former president of the universities of Michigan and Iowa.
  • Grant Hill, former college and NBA athlete; current broadcaster and NBA team owner.
  • Denis McDonough, senior principal and chair of the Rework America Task Force for the Markle Foundation and former chief of staff to President Barack Obama.
  • Vivek Murthy, 19th surgeon general of the United States.


NCAA Women’s Basketball Unveils New Strategic Plan
The NCAA has announced its strategic plan for women’s basketball, a game plan to guide decision-making in the sport across all three NCAA divisions through 2024.

NCAA women’s basketball engaged more than 1,000 stakeholders in the development of their comprehensive plan, which will guide NCAA Divisions I, II and III in collaboration with their key stakeholders to express a fully shared vision for the future of women’s basketball.


Combined Championships for DI, DII and DIII Basketball Planned
The NCAA announced the national championships for Divisions I, II and III men’s and women’s basketball will be celebrated as combined championship events in Atlanta during the 2020 NCAA Men’s Final Four and in Dallas as part of the 2023 NCAA Women’s Final Four.

It will be the second time for both the men’s and women’s events that the championships for all three divisions will be held in the same city. Men’s basketball previously hosted combined championships in Atlanta in 2013, while the women crowned three national champions in the same venue in Indianapolis in 2016.
