| The West Region ratings process begins this week. |
On Tuesday, the committees charged with identifying the teams gaining access to the NCAA Championships field -- i.e., those squads which DO NOT earn their respective conference's automatic bid -- begin the ratings process that will culminate March 4 on Division II's Selection Sunday.
This week's teleconferences involving the West Region "Rating Advisory Committees" are labeled practice rounds. Next Tuesday, Feb. 13, everything starts getting real. In all, there are three rankings (released on successive Wednesdays beginning Feb. 14) before the final ranking is released in the form of the championships bracket.
In the West, automatic bids will be earned by the conference tournament champions in each gender in the GNAC, PacWest and CCAA conferences. That's three guaranteed spots in each gender's eight-team regional field. It also means five teams will earn at-large berths on both the men's and women's sides, with no restrictions on which conferences those teams come from.
Generally, the top seed in each region will host the eight-team regional tournament (as long as the top seed submits an adequate bid approved by the national office). As we head into the practice rankings this Tuesday, the GNAC is well-positioned for possible hosting rights (Western Oregon on the men's side, Alaska Anchorage on the women's side).
